I have been researching some of the best and extensive bike sharing systems across the world. The systems that stood out are the Parisian Velib and the Hangzhou Public bike-share.
The Parisian Velib is the biggest bike-share system outside China, with over 20,000 bikes across 1200 stations. The Velib, launched in 2007, is the model for most bike-share systems developed across Europe and the world. During the first 3 years of operation, many bikes were vandalized or stolen, with some ending up even in distant Romania. Soon, the system became stabilized as people got used to the system and saw its benefits. It is now regarded as the most successful bike-share system in the world.
The largest bike-share system in the world is in Hangzhou, with over 66,500 bikes spread over 2700 stations. It is incredibly popular and the system has just received nearly 18.5 million British pounds from the City government.
As for next steps, I will look into how these systems solve the unique problems Bengaluru faces.
