Welcome to my blog, Bike Sharing in Bengaluru! In this blog, you can follow my exciting adventure as I create a Bike-sharing program that augments Bengaluru’s public transportation system.

What is a bike-sharing system? According to Wikipedia, a bike sharing system is a service in which bicycles are made available for shared use to individuals. Bike-share schemes allow people to borrow a bike from point-A and return it at point-B.

We will make a distinction here, between bike-rentals and bike sharing. Bike-rentals are common in Bengaluru, but are focused towards tourism. As a transportation, renting a bike would be costlier than a bike-sharing system, which the research will attempt to show over the next few weeks.

I will be researching different bike-sharing programs implemented around the world, from Amsterdam to Jakarta. Part of it will include researching the bike-sharing or bike-rental systems already in place locally in and around Bengaluru. This way, I will not be “reinventing the wheel.” The research will look into making the sharing system fashionable so that both the rich and the poor will make use of the bike sharing system and also integrate it into the community. It will also look into bike-sharing systems as a “last-mile” solution for public transportation like the Bengaluru Metro. In the end, technology will be use only to create better access as it can avoid unnecessary cost for a developing country.
